What is orthodontic treatment (braces)?

Orthodontic treatment (braces) is a specialized dental treatment aimed at moving misaligned teeth into their proper positions within the jaw, thereby improving chewing function and creating a naturally beautiful smile.

Applicable cases

Orthodontic treatment is indicated for a wide range of aesthetic and functional malocclusions: dental crowding and crooked teeth; spacing and gaps (diastema); protrusion / overjet ("buck teeth") and deep bite; underbite (Class III malocclusion) and crossbite / open bite; and gummy smiles associated with vertical maxillary excess or anterior overeruption.

Advantages

  • Biologically safe & non-invasive: preserves 100% of natural tooth structure without shaving enamel.
  • Harmonious facial aesthetics: corrects facial profiles, balances lip posture, and reduces gingival display by 2–4 mm in indicated gummy smile cases.
  • Optimized chewing & joint health: aligns bite forces to protect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and reduces abnormal tooth wear.
  • Stable, lifelong results: maintained effectively through tailored post-treatment retention protocols.

Limitations

Treatment duration requires patience, averaging 12 to 24+ months depending on case complexity.

Two treatment paths, one result: straight teeth and a healthy bite

There's no single protocol for every case. After your exam and X-ray, the dentist will recommend the path that fits your degree of misalignment, budget and how you want to experience the treatment.

Metal braces

The foundational orthodontic method, with stable force control that handles most bite misalignments, including complex cases.

Suitable for

Mild to severe bite issues - protrusion, underbite, heavy crowding - needing precise force control throughout treatment.

Duration

18-30 months, depending on complexity

Key benefits

  • Handles even the most difficult cases
  • The most cost-effective option available
  • Effectiveness doesn't depend on patient compliance with wear time

Ceramic braces

The same mechanism as metal braces but in tooth-colored material, more discreet in close conversation.

Suitable for

Moderate to difficult misalignment, prioritizing aesthetics while wearing braces - especially suited to those who meet people often or work client-facing roles.

Duration

18-30 months, depending on complexity

Key benefits

  • More discreet than metal
  • Force control as stable as traditional braces
  • Resists staining with proper care

Is orthodontic treatment right for you?

A good fit if you have

  • Crooked, crowded or gapped teeth
  • Bite issues: overbite, underbite, deep bite, open bite, crossbite
  • Previously braced but teeth shifted again from not wearing a retainer
  • Wants orthodontic treatment before cosmetic restorations (veneers, crowns) for optimal proportions
  • Gums and jawbone healthy enough to withstand the forces of tooth movement
  • Gummy smile combined with an overbite or protruding teeth

Worth a consult first if

  • Severe periodontal disease with significant bone loss not yet stably treated
  • Untreated tooth decay or pulp infection
  • Expects clearly visible results within a few weeks (orthodontics always takes time)
  • Cannot attend regular follow-up visits on the dentist's schedule
  • Children who haven't lost all baby teeth yet (needs a separate timing assessment)

Not sure which case applies to you? Our dentist will examine you, take X-rays and advise on a specific treatment direction - completely free. Please note: treatment duration is fairly long, averaging 24 months or more.

The Orthodontic Journey at Lux Dental

1

Examination & diagnostic imaging

The dentist checks your bite, takes panoramic/cephalometric X-rays, and assesses the degree of misalignment and jawbone condition.

2

3D scan & treatment planning

Digital impressions are taken and the movement path is simulated - you preview the expected result together with the dentist.

3

Begin treatment

Braces are placed or your first set of Invisalign trays is issued, with detailed guidance on home care and use.

4

Regular follow-up visits

Force adjustments (braces) or new trays (Invisalign) every 4-8 weeks, closely tracking tooth movement progress.

5

Removal & retainer wear

Once active treatment ends, a retainer is worn as prescribed to keep the result stable long term.

Frequently Asked Questions about Orthodontics

There's no one-size-fits-all answer - it depends on the severity of your bite issue, your budget, and how much aesthetics matter to you during treatment. The dentist will recommend the right path after a specific exam and X-ray.

For most cases, visible change appears within the first 4-6 months, but the final result (a stable bite) usually takes 12 months or more depending on the initial severity.

Yes. An adult jawbone still responds well to movement forces - the only difference is that it may progress slightly slower than in teenagers. Most orthodontic patients at Lux Dental are adults.

Yes - and that's also an advantage. You remove the tray to eat and brush your teeth, but must wear it at least 20-22 hours a day to keep movement on schedule.

There's a full-time wear phase right after braces come off, then it's gradually reduced as the dentist directs. This step is essential to prevent teeth from shifting back over time.

You may feel mild pressure for 2-3 days after each adjustment or new tray - a sign your teeth are moving. This sensation fades quickly and doesn’t last long.

Wearing the retainer exactly as prescribed is the deciding factor. In addition, check-ups every 6-12 months let the dentist monitor and intervene early if teeth show signs of shifting.
